Elective modules ("Wahlpflichtmodule" (WPs)) in the B.A. "Anglistik" program
Elective modules (WPs) are modules that allow you to focus on specific fields within English Studies. There are selection rules which allow you to choose between several options.
These rules are not the same for all WPs or groups of WPs.
The following table provides an overview of the WP modules and selection rules in the B.A. "Anglistik" program. Please also note the information in the checklist and the examination and study regulations, as well as the general, progam-independent information on elective modules.

Exams: regulations specific to the B.A. "Anglistik"
Please also note the regulations applicable to all degree programs offered at the English Department.
The basic qualifying examination ("Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprofung (GOP)) serves as an early orientation as to whether you are likely to be able to meet the requirements of the Bachelor's degree program.
In the B.A. "Anglistik" (PStO 2019) the GOP comprises the following modules:
- P 1 Basic Qualifying Module Linguistics (= P 1.1 Introduction to English Linguistics and P 1.2 Lecture Linguistics 1)
- P 2 Basic Qualifying Module Literary Studies (= P 2.1 Introduction to English Literary Studies and P 2.2 Lecture Literary Studies 1)
These modules (i.e. all four associated courses) must be taken and attended in the first semester and the examinations for the complete module P 1 and the complete module P 2 must be taken for the first time at the end of the first semester. All examinations belonging to the GOP must be passed by the end of the 2nd semester at the latest, otherwise the degree program is deemed to have been failed.
According to §11(6) of the study and examinations regulations (PStO) for the B.A. "Anglistik" (version 2019), there is a free first trial for module examinations. This means that, under certain conditions, a failure of the first attempt does not count.
These conditions are as follows (for legally binding information, please consult the examination and study regulations (PStO)):
- The examination is taken for the first time after uninterrupted study of the subject within the standard period of study ("Regelstudienzeit").
- The examination (first attempt) has actually been taken or the required examination work (term paper, etc.) has actually been submitted on time; if you do not sit the examination or do not submit anything, the free examination attempt is forfeited.
There is no free first trial für the GOP-modules (P 1 and P 2) and for the B.A. thesis (WP 28.1 und WP 29.1).
Examinations taken and passed as free first trial can be repeated once on the next possible regular date to improve the grade. The better result counts.
Registration for the Bachelor's thesis (+ Bachelor's colloquium) in Linguistics (WP 28) requires that module WP 1 or WP 2 have been passed.
Registration for the Bachelor's thesis (+ Bachelor's colloquium) in Literary Studies (WP 29) requires that module WP 5 or WP 6 have been passed.
Please also consult the general information on admission requirements between modules.
Registration for the Bachelor's thesis and Bachelor's colloquium
The Bachelor's thesis can be written in linguistics (WP 28) or literary studies (WP 29).
The decision for one of these two subject areas is already made when choosing between Profile Module WP 13 (Linguistics) and Profile Module WP 14 (Literary Studies).
If you follow the recommendations for planning your studies, you will write your Bachelor's thesis in the sixth semester. It is also possible to write the thesis in the seventh semester. It has to be passed by the end of the eighth semester.
The registration procedure for the Bachelor's thesis is different from that for all other examinations. It takes place during a separate registration period using a registration form. The step-by-step instructions on the right show you the exact registration process.
To register for the Bachelor's colloquium, simply register ("belegen") in LSF as usual during the course registration phase. Please note that you also have to register for the exam during the exam registration period.

The (exact) topic is set by the supervisor. However, you can (and should) express your topic preferences in advance of registration.
An overview of topics supervised in the past and/or topics in which individual supervisors are interested can be found on the supervisors' personal pages.
Please get in touch with the person whom you would like to supervise your thesis well in advance to the registration period.
The Bachelor's thesis should be 10.500–13.000 words long.
The cover sheet, the table of contents and the list of references are not part of the word count.
You have 13 weeks to work on your thesis.
There is a fixed deadline, which is calculated relative to the 1st day of the registration period. This deadline is announced on the website of the examinations office (PAGS). It applies to everyone, regardless of when exactly you registered during the registration week.
It is not possible to unregister from the Bachelor's thesis without giving reasons.
It is possible to unregister or get a deadline extension, however, if you fall ill or are unable to work for other reasons for which you are not responsible during the 13 weeks available for working on the thesis.
If the period of illness (or other conditions which prevent you from working on the thesis) covers less than half of the 13 weeks, you can apply for a deadline extension. If you cannot work for longer than half of the 13 weeks you can ask to be unregistered from the thesis. You can then start anew with a new topic in the next registration period.
Withdrawals and extensions can only be applied for via the examinations office (PAGS) on presentation of appropriate evidence. Please contact the responsible person at PAGS (Ms Jäckle) as early as possible in such cases.
In case of failure, the Bachelor's thesis can be repeated once. This repetition must take place on the next possible examination date (i.e. in the subsequent semester).
The second attempt can be supervised by the same or a different person than the first attempt. The choice of module (WP 28 or WP 29) is irreversible. A different topic must be chosen than for the first attempt.
